Quarterly Incentives
Each quarter, the students are assigned a point goal by their classroom teacher. If they achieve their goal, the students are invited to participate in a special event such as a field trip or a party. These activities are sometimes divided into upper grade activities and lower grade activities.
Most of the time, students are working toward their own individual goals. Sometimes, however, classes compete against each other to reach their goals. This can be a lot of fun for the kids! The students' goals are based on a variety of factors including reading level, fiction/non-fiction, award-winning books, specific genres such as historical fiction, science fiction, realistic fiction, mysteries, book that is part of a series, and biographies.
Upper grade students are also required to keep their average percentage at or above 85% correct.
Creston School also utilizes the Star Reading Program (also made by Reading Renaissance) that accompanies Accelerated Reader. STAR Reading helps teachers determine the reading level of each student and measure individual and class growth. Through the use of the STAR test, teachers can determine the appropriate level of challenge for each child, instantly place new students, and identify those who need individual help.
In the program, the students (1st-8th) take a reading comprehension test that is 25 questions long. The questions start out at grade level and adjust as the child answers them correctly or incorrectly. (For example: if a child answers a question incorrectly, the next answer is easier.)
